Physiotherapie

Physiotherapy commences before the operation. The patients receive gait training and information on how to behave properly after surgery.
Beginning on the first day after the operation walking with crutches or other orthopaedic auxiliaries is exercised, depending on the abilities of the patient. First there will be a partial weight bearing of the operated leg. This will be taught by the experienced physiotherapists. Later stair climbing exercises are also included. Knee patients will have daily treatment with a continuous passive motion splint.
Additionally the patients will learn exercises to prevent pneumonia and deep vein thrombosis, which they will execute by themselves in the following weeks.

During the stay in the hospital patients also receive an number of physiotherapeutic exercises. Following goals should be accomplished:
  • Independent walking with crutches
  • Strengthening of the muscular system
  • Independent execution of activities of daily living.
  • Proper use of various orthopaedic auxiliaries

In addition to the above mentioned therapies the following treatments are available by request of the surgeon:
  • Manual lymphatic drainage (heavy swelling of the operated leg or because of preexisting diseases)
  • Ultrasound treatment (larger haematomas)
  • Treatment with cold or heat
  • Inhalations
